Vale John Elphinston

The letter below has been sent from John’s wife Sandy Davies.

“Dear Friends,

Yesterday was a very sad day for all of John’s family and friends but for John it was a time to finally end his suffering.

After the dreadful news three and a half years ago that he had the rare cancer LMS and there was no chance of recovery, he put all his financial, social and family affairs in order and prepared for his end of life.

Chemotherapy and radiation treatments helped to prolong his life for a little while and we were very grateful to have made the most of his remaining time with very enjoyable trips overseas and many treasured get-togethers with family and friends.

During the past few months, it became obvious that his body and mind were unable to keep up the fight.

John and I were overwhelmed by the feelings and memories expressed via emails, messages, phone calls and visits and I would like to thank you all for giving John the reassurance that he had been a much-loved friend and the confidence in knowing that he had lived a good life.

Yesterday morning he was at peace emotionally, comfortable with his decision and well and truly prepared to finish his suffering. We were both content that we could say goodbye to each other in our own home and that I wouldn’t have to walk out of a hospital and drive home to an empty house. We exchanged hugs and kisses and final words of love and he slowly slipped into unconsciousness.  It was truly a morning that I will treasure for the rest of my life.

I feel that I have been able to relate these words knowing that you are a fortunate and unique group of men who have shared many close moments in life and would want to hear these details. I feel privileged to have know and loved John and to consider you all to be friends of mine.  There’s no John here to proofread my words; what will I do from now on?!

Warm regards,

Sandy”

Funeral details yet to be finally confirmed, but likely Friday 25 November, in the afternoon.
